President: Delyth Bressington September 2007 Dear Friends and Music-lovers, I am writing to you after what has been, by general agreement, a truly memorable year in our history. Our concerts were again successful and as well attended as ever and we have been thrilled at the response and accolades from so many people after our performances of the “Hymn of Praise” by Mendelssohn in May. This was by far the most ambitious concert we have ever given; together with “Côr Bro Ogwr” from Bridgend in South Wales and a very large orchestra with a full Wind and Brass section we numbered over 170 performers! For the first time we gave a concert in the wonderful ambience of the Church of Our Lady of Carmen in Benalmádena and we were delighted with the reception and applause accorded to us by the very large audience. As I mentioned above, this was our most ambitious programme ever, not simply in terms of the musical demands on our members, but particularly in terms of expense. It would not have been possible without the financial help of people such as you – music-lovers who like to support music-making here on this coast. As amateur musicians with some ambition we have to rely on the generosity and benevolence of patrons and sponsors and we are indeed very grateful to so many of our friends for their past support. Once again I ask you to keep on helping us as this is the only way in which we can guarantee our future. As most of you will already know, the policy of the Archdiocese means we can not charge admission for concerts held in churches. This means that we have had to dip quite heavily into our reserves in order to give our twice-yearly concerts and to maintain the standards to which our audiences have become accustomed. This season the main works we shall perform are the “Requiem” by Fauré and a Trumpet Concerto by Albinoni in December and, at the end of May, the “Harmony Mass” by Haydn. We would be so very grateful if you were to support us and we look forward to seeing you, and hopefully very many new faces, at our concerts.
